Why your brand isn't working (and how to fix it)

Writer's picture: Rachael LyonsRachael Lyons

I see you - You’re showing up, doing the work but something isn’t clicking. It feels like your branding isn't working - you are somewhere in the messy middle. Maybe your website isn’t converting. Maybe your social media engagement isn't picking up no matter how hard you try. Maybe you’re pouring time (and money) into marketing that just isn’t landing with the right audience or if it is landing - it is not landing with the clients that actually want to pay you the big bucks.

Truth bomb - It’s probably not your marketing. It’s more than likely your brand.

Because, (I know I am like a record on repeat with this but its true) branding is the vehicle that gets the marketing from A to B. If your marketing isn’t getting traction, the problem isn’t the engine - it’s the bloody annoying temp traffic lights your brand is putting in the way.

If this is resonating, let’s break down why your brand isn’t working - and what you can do about it. 👇

1. You're brand is blending into the sea of same

If your brand looks like every other business in Warrington, Manchester or the whole of the internet, that’s a problem. A strong brand makes instant impact - it’s recognisable, it’s confident, it's memorable and it sets you apart.

The Fix: Ask yourself:

  • Would someone recognise my brand immediately from a post, email or website visit?

  • Does my brand actually look and feel like me and represent the service I give (or is it just a template, like the other businesses out there)?

  • Am I just another online business, or do I have a real point of difference?

If you’re blending in, it’s probably time for a rebrand that puts your whole business front and centre so that people remember you.

2. Your Website Is Just Sitting There

Your website should lead your clients to a clear outcome. As soon as they land on it it should shout about your professionalism and make it clear why they need to choose you. If it doesn't feel like it is doing its job...

The Fix: Check these:

  • Is your website clear, professional and easy to navigate? (Your clients should get to where they need to be within 3 clicks or less)

  • Does it tell visitors exactly who you are, what you do, and why they should care within 5 seconds?

  • Is it designed to convert - not just look pretty? (Do you lead your clients through a journey to contact you? With clear Calls To Action throughout?)

A stunning brand is the foundation, but a strategic, well-built website is what will turn your browsers into buyers.

3. Your Branding Doesn’t Match Your Business Growth

Did you throw together a logo and some colours when you first started your business? (we’ve all been there). But if your business has evolved, your brand needs to evolve with it and its probably feeling a bit left behind.

The Fix: If your brand feels outdated, generic or misaligned at the moment, ask yourself:

  • Would I feel proud handing my business card to my dream client and allowing them to stalk me on the internet?

  • Does my branding match the level I want to be at - or does it reflect a side hustle right now?

  • Am I confident in my brand or do I find myself apologising for it?

A powerful brand gives you confidence, clarity and the freedom to show up like the expert you already are. If your brand isn’t doing that, it’s 100% time to fix it.

4.Your Messaging Isn’t Landing

Something else that I repeat over and over again - branding is not just about how your brand looks - it’s about how it speaks and how it makes people feel. If your brand messaging is vague, forgettable or missing personality, you will struggle to connect with your audience.

The Fix:

  • Speak directly to your ideal client - drop any jargon you are currently using, meet them where they are at.

  • Make sure your website, socials and emails are consistent in tone and messaging. (A way to ensure you do this every single time, is to not use Ai OR use it very strategically and give it specific instructions on how to sound like you!)

  • Use words and visuals that make people feel something - excitement, trust, connection. (I LOVE to have a word bank that I refer back to , mine has words in it like "defo", "gorgeous", "100%" - thinks I use naturally every single day that can be a constant throughout my brand messaging.)

  • Your brand voice is just as important as your visuals. If your messaging isn’t making an impact, it’s defo time to refine it.

5. Your Marketing Feels Like Hard Work (Because It Is)

I love marketing - it should feel exciting and ideas should flow to you even if you are the least creative person you ever met. Things it should not be - exhausting, an uphill battle, complicated. But when your brand is out of alignment, every Instagram post, blog or email can feel like a struggle. (trust me I know - this usually happens when you are ready for growth in your business and you need your brand strategy bringing back into alignment)

The Fix:

  • Stop relying on random Canva templates and start using a cohesive brand identity.

  • Get a website that sells for you, so you’re not constantly having to chase new business and wasting time making updates that don't even make any sens to you - never mind your clients.

  • Make sure every touchpoint - from social media to packaging - feels like the business you want to run, you shouldn't be second guessing any part of your process or service.

When your brand is on point, marketing becomes effortless because your in alignment, confident and know you are doing everything you can for your business and your ideal client.
